While you may expect to easily be given a price, it’s not that simple — the cost of hyperbaric oxygen therapy may differ for each patient based on the condition treated, insurance coverage options, and number of treatments deemed medically necessary.

#1: HBOT for conditions covered by most insurance companies.

Many people are surprised to learn that hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be covered by Medicare and commercial insurance depending on the medical condition. In most of these cases, the insurance company will require prior authorization to cover HBOT treatments.

Currently, Medicare and most commercial insurance companies generally cover HBOT for:

• Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
• Decompression Sickness (Bends)
• Air or Gas Embolism
• Gas Gangrene
• Necrotizing Fasciitis
• Acute Peripheral Arterial Insufficiency for Diabetics
• Cyanide Poisoning
• Exceptional Blood Loss (Anemia)
• Intracranial Abscess
• Thermal Burns
• Acute Traumatic Peripheral Ischemia — as an adjunctive treatment to be used in combination with accepted standard therapeutic measures when loss of function, limb, or life is threatened.
• Crush Injuries and Suturing of Severed Limbs — as an adjunctive treatment when loss of function, limb, or life is threatened.
• Preparation and Preservation of Compromised Skin Grafts and Flaps — not for primary management of wounds.
• Chronic Refractory Osteomyelitis — when unresponsive to conventional medical and surgical management.
• Osteoradionecrosis — as an adjunct to conventional treatment.
• Soft Tissue Radionecrosis — as an adjunct to conventional treatment.
• Actinomycosis — only as an adjunct to conventional therapy when the disease process is refractory to antibiotics and surgical treatment.
• Diabetic Wounds of the Lower Extremities in patients who meet the following criteria: 
  • Patient has type I or type II diabetes and has a lower extremity wound that is due to diabetes
  • Patient has a wound classified as Wagner grade III or higher, and
  • Patient has failed an adequate course of standard wound therapy.
• Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss — covered by selected commercial insurance companies.

The amount you pay out-of-pocket when you seek insurance coverage for HBOT depends on your insurance plan. Some insurance plans will require you to pay a copay, while others require you to pay towards your deductible or coinsurance.

#2: HBOT for off-label conditions that may or may not be covered by insurance.

In addition to treatment for conditions covered by most insurance companies, many patients also find commercial insurance will cover HBOT treatments for a number of off-label conditions. 

Some of the most common off-label conditions that may or may not be covered by insurance include:

A number of commercial insurance companies—including BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS), United Healthcare, Cigna, Humana, and more—will approve HBOT for off-label conditions if they deem treatment as medically necessary, sometimes for conditions that are not commonly approved.

#3: HBOT for other conditions paid out-of-pocket. 

If you find that your treatment is not covered by insurance, you do have the option of paying out-of-pocket.

Your out-of-pocket, non-insured hyperbaric oxygen therapy cost is usually dependent upon how many treatments you need for your specific medical condition which is determined by either your own physician or by self-referral to be evaluated by a hyperbaric trained physician.

Increasing the time under pressure will enhance stem cell mobilization and allow for increased anti-inflammatory effects. Discuss with one of our Hyperbaric Consultants whether you would benefit more from an additional 30 minutes per session of Oxygen Supersaturation.
